Germany - Overview
The Federal Republic of Germany shares its borders with Austria,
Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands,
Poland and Switzerland. In the northwest there is a coastline
on the North Sea.
There are 16 states (Bundeslander) in Germany and the landscape
is totally varied. The Country boasts 30 UNESCO World Heritage
Sites across these 16 States.
Western Germany has three most famous features - the Rhine,
Bavaria and the Black Forest. Eastern Germany has many lakes
and a lot of lowland and also has hills and mountains of the
Lausitzer Bergland, the Saxon Hills and the Erzgebirge. River
basins, including, Elbe, Saale, havel, Spree and Oder are also
part of eastern Germany. The major cities in eastern Germany
are Dresden, Leipzig, Erfurt, Halle, Magdeburg, Potsdam, Schwerin
and Rostock. The southern part of Germany consists of the two
largest states, Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria.
Germany's towns and cities are so diverse, extending from romantic
to medieval to cosmopolitan themes. All areas have their own
distinctive regional foods and such a diverse choice of wines
and beers.
Germany is still the largest economy in Europe and has great
global influence.
