UK - Overview
The United Kingdom consists of Great Britain - England, Scotland
and Wales plus the 6 counties in Northern Ireland. The Channel
Islands and The Isle of Man are also part of the British Isles
but are not officially part of the UK.
The UK is one of the most culturally diverse Countries in the
whole world.
There are two broad areas in the British mainland - they are
the highland regions in the North and the lower lying regions
of the South. The Northern areas - Scotland and Wales are much
more sparsely populated than the Southern part of the Country,
which is more populated and prosperous. London is the largest
and most attractive City in the UK with many tourists and visitors
flocking there. It has many tourist attractions, such as, Buckingham
Palace, Westminster Abbey, St Pauls Cathedral, Big Ben, The
London Eye and The Tower of London.
Other attractive and popular areas in the UK include Oxford
and Cambridge, home to the top Universities and rowing teams.
Close by are the picturesque Costworlds with beautiful villages
and Brighton's busy seaside on the South coast. Further a field
is the Lake District, in the Northern part of the Country, along
with Yorkshire and Durham. Cornwall in the Southwest is also
a very popular destination.
Scotland is to the North of England and the majority of the
population can be found in the Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh
areas. Wales lies to the West of England and offers lively coastal
Cities, such as Cardiff and Swansea as well offering historic
castles and beautiful landscape. The Channel Islands are found
in between England and France in The Channel and The Isle of
Man can be found in between Wales and Ireland.
