10 Top Tips for men & women on how to dress to get the job

As we have repeated over and over, first impressions count and dressing well for an interview plays a major part in those first impressions. We have outlined some considerations for women and also those specific for men, but here are some general guidelines for everyone to take on board.

1. Tattoos and piercings

If you are able to cover tattoos, do as this can help with any prejudice views that the interviewer may have, whether you feel that is right or not. Piercings that are subtle are fine but if you have piercings in your eyebrows, tongue, face etc then you may be better off removing them for the interview.

2. Perfume/Aftershave

It is great to smell nice but do not put too much on. Sometimes if it is overbearing it can put people off you and with smell having such a huge bearing on memory, you never know what your smell could bring back to the interviewer.

3. Iron

Make sure you have ironed all your clothing and you do not have a body full of wrinkles.

4. Fit

Try on your outfit before the day of the interview in case it does not fit and you need to find a replacement.

5. Holes/tears/stains

Check over your outfit carefully to ensure you have not missed a hole or stain from the last time you wore it. Sometimes it can be a significant amount of time between wearing smart clothes that you forget what happened before placing it back in the wardrobe.

6. Hair

As well as having smart hair, if you suffer from dandruff, make sure that you have removed any from your suit before entering the building for your interview.

7. Fresh Breath

Always clean your teeth thoroughly before leaving the house and either have a mint or spray your mouth with mint before your interview. Bad breath can be so off-putting. Never have chewing gum in your mouth.

8. Bag/Briefcase

Take something with you to carry your CV and pens and make sure you are ready for the handshake by holding it in your left hand.

9. Ipod/Phone

Never enter the building with earphones in or on your telephone. These need to be put away in your pocket or bag and your phone on silent or OFF.

10. Smile & Handshake

Although this may not cover “dress” it is one of the most important points of all and that is a big smile and great handshake when arriving for your interview. Do not forget that!

These points are probably obvious to many but some can be missing easily. Keep them in mind when you are preparing for the interview and you will not go wrong.
