What is the role of a primary school teacher?
Your role will likely include some of the following day to day activities:
- Preparing, planning and delivering lessons to a selected age group;
- Ensuring all areas of the curriculum are covered when teaching;
- Marking work and giving appropriate feedback to students and parents/carers;
- Preparing the classroom before school and tidying away after;
- Maintaining documentations for progress and development of students;
- Researching new areas and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the subject;
- Participating in regular training (inset) as part of continuing professional development (CPD);
- Engaging in pastoral duties on an individual basis through school or personal difficulties;
- Managing the behaviour of the students in the classroom and at the school and using appropriate measures in cases of misconduct
- Supervising and supporting the work of assistants, teachers, trainees and newly qualified teachers (NQTs);
- Participating in departmental meetings, parents' evenings and the whole school training events;
- Liaising with other professionals including mentors, career counselors, school psychologists and educational welfare officers.
What are the entry requirements?
Unless you have a first degree is a Bachelor of Education or BA/BSc with Qualified Teacher Status, it is essential to get QTS in order to teach in the local autonomy system. Independent schools are authorized to employ teachers without QTS/TQ, but in practice this is not common

Hours are term time and usually around 50 hours per week. You would be expected to stay after the school day and work in the eveningsto prepare and mark work. There will be other events that will take up your time including for example, parents evening, concerts, school plays etc
What career progression is there for a primary school teacher?
Primary school teachers can progress into management positions within their school or co-ordinate work in their chosen subject. It is possible to work towards being an "advanced skills teacher" or achieve expertise status via the "excellent teacher scheme". Some teachers move out of schools and into further or higher education, e.g. exam boards or into the local education authority.
