How to use Linkedin to help you in your job search

Linkedin has become the largest professional network and the place to be if you are looking for a new job. It allows you to connect to other professionals and check the profiles of other individuals, especially those hiring/recruitment managers in the companies you are interested in.

If you are interested in a specific company, you can use Linkedin to search for that company, view the number of employees and find individuals who may be connected to people you are already connected to. This way you can connect to them and contact them directly about roles. The companies may also display the jobs they have at their company.

Your professional headline is a useful place to really highlight your skills and abilities. It is seen by everyone so instead of just writing “Sales Exec” you should put something more attractive like “Excellent Sales Executive with a huge ambition and drive”.

The status updates are the same as on other social networks in that as soon as you write an update everyone in your network will see what you have to say. This means you can put an update about the fact you are looking for new job to let your connections know but it is also advisable to update your status regularly about other things as well. You can also link your blog and Twitter account to your Linkedin account so your blog/status updates automatically go onto Linkedin.

There is also a function that allows you to email all of your connections in one go to let them know you are looking for a new job.

Linkedin groups are a great way to connect with other people in your industry and those with similar interests. You can get involved in discussions and ask others for advice. Search through the groups to find those that are most relevant to you.

Linkedin is probably a better tool for the more professional roles and industries. It is a growing network and one to embrace as it grows – don’t get left behind.
