Italy - Overview
Italy borders the north of the European mainland. The Alps separate
Italy from France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.
Italy has only been unified since 1861 with the Etruscans being
the earliest settlers in northern Italy in the 6th century BC.
Today, the Cities found in Italy all have their own unique identity
and architecture, e.g. Venice, Genoa and Naples. Other attractive
places with a distinctive feel include San Gimignano in Tuscany
with it romantic medieval hill towns and Positano on the Amalfi
coast with is unspoilt fishing villages. There is a huge mix
of contemporary fashion, art and history as well as natural
landscape across the whole of the country. Costa Smeralda has
some beautiful coastline - sand, sea and sun whilst the Dolomite
Mountains offer mountains covered in snow for winter sports
enthusiasts. There are plenty of vineyards to visit to taste
some of the best wine from around the world. And off the south
coast you can find Sicily or Sardinia for further beautiful
sites of the Mediterranean.
