How To Resign The Correct Way

Resigning can be a daunting process and there are right and wrong ways of going about it. You do not want to burn any bridges by leaving negative feelings behind with your boss, especially if you will require a reference. By getting it right you will help not only your personal future but your career development as well.

So, how can you make the process as painless and as easy as possible? And what are your rights and obligations as well as your employers' responsibilities to you.

Written Resignation

To ensure there is no miss-understanding and the company receives something they can keep on file, always submit your resignation in writing. Within your statement say that you have decided to resign, show your thanks for being privileged to work for them, a final date that you will be leaving (bearing in mind your notice period) and that you will be happy to work right up until you are due to leave in good spirits.

Oral Resignation

You need to confront your boss when you resign and tell them to your face. It may be a good idea to submit your written resignation at the same time. Be prepared for any kind of reaction that you may face i.e. surprise, angry, offer of more money, being asked to leave the room etc but whatever situation, always remain calm, polite and courteous. Resigning is never wrong you are just making your next step in your career path so stay confident and positive.

The subject of 'WHY'?

It is a good idea to make sure you tell everyone the same reason as to why you are leaving, otherwise if your manager finds out alternative reasons it could backfire and make you look like a liar. This may be reflected in any references you request.

At the same time, if you hate your boss and you are leaving because of a negative reason, try to avoid off-loading your feelings and problems onto them. Again, remember that you will require a reference and it is always best to leave a company with good feeling.

Final Pointer

It is important that you work hard right up to the final day of leaving. Again, it could affect your references and career development if you become mentally unemployed in your notice period.
