3 Tough Job Interview Questions And Answers

1) How do you define success?

In order for you to be successful in your role, your idea of success should match that of the employer’s. If you define success differently than the company, then you may be aiming for targets that are not aligned to the ones the company wants you to be aiming for, and both you and the company will be left unsatisfied. There are a lot of good ways you can define success, as long as you mention doing what’s best for the company and working hard to accomplish your goals. Write down your definition of success before the interview. Sometimes questions that seem easy can stump you if you’re unprepared for it during the interview.

Tips:

  • You can give a general definition of success, then let it lead into giving examples of accomplishments you consider a success.
  • Some companies have very established ways of measuring the success of employees. If the company you are interviewing for does, you can mention their milestones of success and wanting to meet those expectations.
  • The dictionary definition defines success as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” Your personal definition of success may be more complex than this according to your own values and ideals you hold yourself to. This is what employers want to know about you by asking this question.
  • As usual with most interview questions, keep your answer focused on the professional world. Success in your personal life is different than success in your professional one, so keep the two separate during the interview.

Example: “I define success by bringing enthusiasm and passion to the task at hand, and putting forth hard work and dedication to accomplish the goals set out by the company, me, and/or the client or customer. Success means putting forth your best effort in all that you do in order to accomplish what needs to be done; and learning from each project and experience in order to grow and become the best possible professional.”

“Success means completing a project on time, within or under budget, and attaining complete customer satisfaction, or positive feedback of my performance.”

2) What quality or attribute do you feel will contribute most to your career success?

In order to ace the job interview, you should know your top skills and strengths in the workplace. But this question is framed a little differently, asking you to name the top quality or attribute you possess that will prove critical to your career success and make you stand out amongst competitors. What employers are really asking is why should we hire you for the job? What do you bring to the position that distinguishes you from the other candidates? What will ensure you are successful in the position if hired?

Tips:

  • You don’t want to sound cliché so be sure to give an explanation of how you exhibit the quality or attribute you express.
  • The best answers typically include attributes like: drive, determination, and motivation to succeed, passion, dedication, a go-getter attitude, perseverance, and so on.

Example: “The quality I feel will most contribute to career success is my drive and determination to succeed in every project I’m involved in. I strive to deliver the highest quality of work in everything I do and try to benefit the company I am a part of in every way possible.”

3) What attributes do you admire in your colleagues?

This question can be viewed as a type of disguise to figure out what attributes and values you hold in the workplace, and which ones you try to live up to yourself. For example, if you say you love colleagues with a great sense of humor, it shows that you probably also have a good sense of humor and enjoy making jokes or lightening things up in the office. On the other hand, if you say you prefer colleagues who mind their own business at work, you may come off as anti-social or difficult to get along with other colleagues. Choose some qualities that are valued in the workplace and mention those. Think about qualities you do admire in colleagues, just make sure they don’t portray you in the wrong light.

Tips:

  • Pick the top 2-4 traits you admire in colleagues such as, a strong work ethic, reliability, good sense of humor, positive team work abilities, integrity, enthusiasm, etc.
  • Use this question to show that you get along easily with colleagues and possess strong interpersonal skills.
  • Remember that the attributes you mention will reflect on the values that you uphold in the workplace.
  • Don’t choose any qualities that could be viewed as negative or make you appear lazy or controversial.

Example: “The qualities I most admire in my colleagues are hard-working, professionalism, dependability and a sense of humor never hurts either. These are all qualities I also try to practice myself in the workplace.”
