Civil engineers are involved with the design, development and manufacture of a wide range of projects for the natural and built environment. Their role is crucial to ensuring the safe, punctual and resourced completion of projects in many sectors, including the construction of highways, waste management, coastal development and geotechnical engineering.

Civil engineering is a broad term that covers several specialist areas of engineering. Plus a civil engineer could be employed in any sector of structural, transport, maritime and environmental Geotechnics.

 

What's the role of a civil engineer?


All roles overlap to a degree and would involve some of the following standard tasks:
  • Using computer modelling software to analyse data;

  • Assessing environmental impacts and risks;
  • Communicating with clients and other professionals about a specific project;
  • Managing every stage of a project and dealing with any issues that arise;
  • Using computer package design (CAD);
  • Evaluating costs, materials, time scales to identify if a project should go ahead;
  • Dealing with customers, public bodies etc;
  • Keeping on top of legal guidelines and health and safety.

What are the entry requirements?


If you are thinking of getting a chartered status at some point, it is important to have a three year Bachelor of Engineering Degree or a four year Master's Degree in Civil Engineering.

To get onto the degree course, you would be required to have five GCSE's and two or three A levels's.

Are there key skills a civil engineer should have?


Some of the most important skills are:
  • Excellent maths, science and computer skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to make decisions;
  • Good team working skills;
  • Good problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to explain designs clearly
  • Knowledge of legal regulations.

What could I earn?


As a guide, starting salaries for graduate engineers are around £23,000. Experienced civil engineers may receive anywhere between £24,000-£40,000. Chartered engineers can earn over £50,000.


How many hours a week would I work?


You would be expected to work a normal office based 35-40 hours per week but over-time is likely to meet deadlines.


What career progression is there for civil engineers?


You could progress your career to gain chartered or incorporated status (explained below).

There are opportunities to work in specialist consulting firms, local authorities, power companies and building contractors. With professional experience you could move into senior project management roles and specialise in a particular field plus there are international opportunities that may crop up.


What training is there?


Usually you would start on a graduate training scheme after your degree which would be within a company environment and this could last up to two years.

You could choose to become chartered or incorporated which would enhance your career progression. By becoming incorporated you would become more involved in the day to day management of engineering and by becoming chartered you would become more strategic.
