Event planners are responsible for creating and managing events, from beginning to end. These events can be, for example, • exhibitions and fairs • product and promotional launches • festival • conferences • social events and fundraisers.

 

What does an event planners role involve?


The role of planners of events varies depending on your organization and the type of event. Activities often include:
  • Exploring the markets to seek opportunities for different events;
  • Meeting with customers to find out exactly what they are looking for from their events;
  • Finding the best venue in the right position;
  • Making sure that the parking services, traffic control, security, first aid, hospitality and media are all set and ready for events;
  • Selecting the speakers or a special guest;
  • Clarifying the entertainment, planning workshops and room layout;
  • Coordinating vendors, client query management and troubleshooting at the event to ensure that all goes smoothly;
  • Meeting all the needs of staff and staff briefing that must be established;
  • Working with marketing and PR teams to ensure you get the numbers for the event.

What entry requirements would there be?


This kind of role is open to most graduates but there are some subjects that are more favourable, for example, event management, business, leisure, hotel/catering management, marketing, tourism. There are a lot of graduate entry roles now coming up. It is quite important to have some kind of work experience under your belt, whether it is working as a volunteer in a hotel, charity, travel organisation or the like.

  • Flexibility;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Keen attention to detail.

What am I likely to earn?

Starting salary can be around £18,000-£25,000, mid-level salaries around £25,000-£45,000 and salaries at senior level can be around £50,000:-£70,000.


What are the working hours like?


Generally normal 35-40 hour weeks are expected but this role will demand a lot more time from you especially in the lead up to events and whilst the event is on. You may be required to work late evenings, weekends and holidays.


Is there career progression?


Yes, but it can depend on a number of factors including the type, the size and position of the organization. It is also important how successful you've been when it comes to background and your ability to demonstrate key skills and qualities in practice.


What training would I get going into an event planner job?


New employees will generally learn off their managers and colleagues receiving on the job training.

What kind of training you get will depend on the company you are working for and training could be internal or external.

There are a number of external training companies. There are plenty of professional organisations and training companies to look for training courses. Some companies will help to fund courses but some may need to be self-funded.

Some of these organisations include for example, Chartered Institute of Marketing, Association of Event Organisers, Meetings Industry Association, Association for Conferences and Events and Society of Event Organisers.
