So what role does the waiter / waitress play?
A waiter / waitress's role involves some of the following tasks:
- To provide excellent customer service;
- Greet patrons;
- To present menus and explain the menu items;
- To write down the customer's order and communicate that with the kitchen;
- Verify customer orders are properly assembled in the kitchen;
- To find out if the customer requires additional elements;
- Ensure customer satisfaction;
- Take payment from customer's;
- Remove empty dishes from the table, cutlery, dirty napkins;
- To determine if the client has finished their meal.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no entry requirements in terms of qualifications for this role however depending on the restaurant and level you are going into will determine whether you need previous experience of waiting.

A waiter or waitress should highlight the following skills:
- Good communication and people skills;
- Ability to be on your feet for long periods;
- Excellent verbal and written skills;
- Time management skills;
- Multi-tasking;
- Ability to work well in a team;
- Keen attention to detail.
What do waiter's and waitress's earn?
To begin with, a waiter/waitress is equal to the minimum wage but tips can help to dramatically change your income. As experience increases, wages do as well. Your salary also will vary depending on the type of restaurant you are going to be working for.
What are the working hours like?
Waiter's and waitress's will work evenings, weekends and holidays. Timetables are highly variable and shift work in common. Part-time work allows some to do just a few hours a week. Some full time staff can work up to 80 hours per week.
What career progression is there?
A waiter/waitress would naturally progress to become a staff trainer, then superisor or assistant manager, then a restaurant or general manager and then an area manager. There is huge potential for waiting staff who start from the bottom.
What training would waiter's and waitress's get?
Most training is done on the job as you will need to learn the processes of the restaurant you are working for and these will vary from restaurant to restaurant. There are external training companies who provide various types of training courses and professional bodies, e.g. Academy of Food and Wine Service where you can pursue a professional qualification if you want to build your career.
