What are Situational Judgement Tests?



Situational Judgement Tests, known as SJT’s for short, are a popular type of psychometric testing used by companies for assessing certain factors. These factors mainly have to do with your judgment abilities and formulating what values (or “competencies”) influence your decisions.

Situational Judgement Test Competencies


The SJT is designed to measure certain values known as competencies in candidates. These competencies include things such as: Decision making, Results Orientation, Leadership, Responsibility and Communication. When answering each question, you should try keep in mind which competencies are involved in each possible action. Below is a chart listing the three types of competencies.

Situational Judgement Test Questions


When taking an SJT you will be presented with a hypothetical scenario and then have to choose the best action to take. The scenario usually involves a conflict or problem that needs to be solved. These conflicts can be about relationships between managers and subordinates, work colleagues or personal decisions that arise at the workplace. Often you will be shown a short video with actors playing out the scenario. There are two main formats of questions in SJTs. One will present you with many possible actions and ask you to choose the best one. A more difficult format will ask you to rank the possible actions from best to worst. When considering which action to take it’s important to consider the different competencies connected to each action.
