The X Factor

If your CV is well written and free of grammatical errors, this is all well and good, but you are still not guaranteed a job interview.

One thing you should consider is that not every CV gets read. Often there are many applicants for every job and some HR executives have piles of CVs on their desk. If your CV doesn't stand out enough at first glance it could be put on the side never to be picked up again.

It helps if your CV stands out from the others in the pile. Some people try to do this by using special fonts, flashy designs or very bright colours. However, such tactics are usually counter-productive and you are better off with a professional format rather than one which sticks out like a sore thumb. Yes, you need your CV to stand out from the crowd, but for the right reasons, not the wrong ones.

If you can make your CV presentable by making it easy to read and a good length then you are already on the right track. If you can also make the right impression with the all-important content, and particularly if you can do this right from the word go, then all the better. You need to sell yourself, and sell yourself well.

Again, this is something which is far easier said than done, but there are more tips for you on this and improving your odds in other sections of this career centre.
